Windows update is installed by default on recent versions of Windows, but Microsoft Update is not.  Windows update only checks for operating system and Internet explorer patches and updates.  You need Microsoft update in order to receive patches and updates on Office, Visual Studio, SQL, .NET Framework, and Windows Live.

In order to determine which one you have, go to Windows Update and check for updates.  It will either say You checked online for updates from Windows Update or Microsoft Update.  If you are on Windows Update, at this point it will have a blue box at the bottom that says, “Get updates for other Microsoft Products,” with a link saying, “Find out more.”

Click “Find out more” and follow the instructions to install Microsoft Update.

That’s all there is to it.  The next time you check for updates, you will get patches and updates for Office, SQL, etc. in addition to the base OS and IE patches and updates.
